VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR LFA PARK MAINTENANCE

PLEASE HELP

Items for action at LFA April 21 Work Session or before

Please choose items from the below list that you would like to help with.  Then signup for your preferences by e-mail to lfadonbrewer@mindspring.com.   We are scheduling a work session in the LFA park Saturday April 21 beginning at 9:30 am.   But most of these could be done ahead at a time convenient to you.  See http://lakeforestassociation.org/ for this list and possible updates.  Thank you!

Raking and digging, with some volunteer’s rakes and wheelbarrow and shovels needed:

>Spread and rake a truckload of mulch.  Locations are around the big oak tree, the tether ball pole, upper level bench, and part of the boat rack area.

>Road downhill – retrieve #57 stone off grass, re-grade spots on road with a shovel, rake.

>Beach – clean off vegetative debris and rake the sand.

>Remove eyebolt in grass near tetherball pole.  (Dig, then unscrew it with a heavy bar).

General cleanup, with LFA or volunteer’s supplies:

>Inside shed – clean out leaves etc from floor and elsewhere.  Clean plumbing fixtures.

>Move fish trap pipe sections to behind shed or discard.

>Covered picnic table – clean roof and posts and table and old charcoal grill.

>Signs – scrub some of them as needed, for example the lifejackets sign.

>General trash and litter patrol in non-grassed areas of park.

>General trash and litter patrol along grass and nearby woods of LFA property at South   Lakeshore Drive, North Lakeshore Drive, and forebay area.

>Remove cut wood.  OK to take home.  Now by parking lot, by ravine, by big oak tree, by boat racks.

Chainsaw work, with the volunteer supplying own saw and safety gear:

>Parking lot – cut up and remove old branches and cut logs etc from ground next to lot.

>At OWASA right-of-way next to 1815 South Lakeshore, clean out some fallen wood

>North Lakeshore Drive – remove some fallen wood near grass strip up from bridge.

Trim shrubs, with pruning and lopping shears supplied by volunteer:

>In the park, aesthetic trimming of shrubs by upper steps; also one level up from shed, maybe edge of grass near boat racks and elsewhere.

>Along North Lakeshore Drive between Booker Creek bridge and LFA’s gate, trim shrubs for easier walking and grass cutting.  Remove vines from gate of access road.

Carpentry, with volunteers supplying power drivers for screws, drill bits, and some hand tools:

>Picnic tables – rebuild five of them.  Recycle some components.   Assemble one new one.  (Some off-site work is needed with a circular saw to custom-cut one set of legs and several beveled struts.  On-site work would benefit from one or two teams of two persons each).

>Check out rot on fascia board and other wood on roof of shed.  May need to replace a board. While up there, remove some or all of the vines from shed building.  (Will need a volunteer’s ladder.  LFA has a lopping shear).

Mechanical, with volunteers supplying some hand tools:

>Fence to right and left of shed: straighten posts, clean and re-mount wire netting. (Need heavy hammer, pliers, wire cutters, maybe more).

>Bulletin board at northeast end of parking lot – replace cracked plastic.  (Screwdrivers and maybe other hand tools from volunteer, LFA can supply the plastic).

>Volley ball net – install new net.  (It has been purchased.  Need a 7/16” wrench for cable clamps.  Can use LFA’s stepstool.  One or two person job).

Painting: (LFA will supply paints, LFA or volunteer to supply other materials as agreed, with reimbursement of costs).

>Gate – Strip old paint, prepare surface, prime, and repaint green.

>Bulletin board by gate – re-paint frame green.

>Repaint wood trim on shed, after fascia board is fixed.  (Ladder needed).

[Jack Chambers will stain gray the picnic tables and upper level bench after rebuilding].

Other:
>Help and vehicle for getting picnic table wood to site.

>Haul old picnic table wood to county dump in truck or trailer or otherwise dispose of.

all the improvements sound great! Is it possible to add more sand to the beach area? It’s been years since they have added sand and it has gotten really thin with lots of the gravel showing now.

Sand — we expect delivery of about 150,000 pounds of additional sand on Monday. The color may not be as light as before. (We were able to get an excellent price deal on that color in 2002, but not this time).
WORK SESSION THIS SATURDAY MORNING — We have several signups for particular tasks, but still need a good turnout of volunteers to rake the beach of debris before the new sand comes, spread mulch, and do various carpentry and cleanup and other work. Please come, with tools as appropriate. As of now, there is a potential bonus: we have a good supply of cut firewood for you to take home, first-come, first-serve.
